Day-to-day / short-term placements
These placements usually arise as a result of a need to cover holidays, training
courses or sickness. They allow you the freedom to choose when you work, but also
give you the opportunity to work at a variety of different schools and gain an insight
into what’s available in your area.
Placements may only last a day, but in the case of sickness cover, could last a number
of weeks. Many schools tend to request the same Teacher to cover time and again,
often leading to the offer of a permanent position.
Because bookings can be short-notice, a high degree of organisation is required.
You need to be prepared to face a brand new class of children and be able to engage
them immediately. So confidence, adaptability and resourcefulness are essential.
Long-term placements
Long-term positions offer the opportunity to really get to know your pupils and other
Teachers within the school. They also offer a higher degree of pay security. You
can really get your teeth into your lesson plans, and - better than that - you get
to see the results of all your hard work.
Long-term assignments involve Teachers becoming an active part of the school, taking
part in parent’s evenings, staff meetings, ongoing pupil assessments and ongoing
professional development. Essentially, Teachers operate as if they were a permanent
member of the faculty.
Permanent placements
Permanent positions often arise from school expansion or retirement. Your contract
will be directly with the school, and your salary will be negotiated with them.
